Polyrhythmia was formed in 1976 by Prof. Dr. Dobri... Polyrhythmia was formed in 1976 by Prof. Dr. Dobri Paliev. Owing to his talent and hard work, the Bulgarian percussion school gained respect and reached one of the top positions in the world.
The 6 members of the Ensemble are graduated of the State Academy of Music Prof. Pancho Vladigerov and did their post-graduate master class under Prof. Dr. Dobri Paliev at the SAM, Sofia. Most of them are now teaching at the Academy and the National School of Music in Sofia. At present Polyrhythmia is directed by Antonin Brjechka, who is also a member of the Ensemble.
The uniaue repertoire of Polyrhythmia includes the most important pieces for percussion instruments in 20th century music, transcriptions from the pre-classics and romantics, Bulgarian folk music. Bulgarian composers have written more than 50 pieces for the Ensemble.
Polyrhythmia is well-known worldwide. They have made successful concert tours both at home and abroad. The Ensemble has given more than 500 performances in Bulgaria, The Czech Republic, Hungary, France, Germany, Luxembourg, Greece, Japan, Russia, Tunisia, Cuba, Brazil and elsewhere. Their art has always been highly evaluated by the media.
Apart from concerts, Polyrhythmia is a regular participant in national and international festi¬vals and competitions. The ensemble is Laureate of the First International Competition for Percussion Ensembles held in Luxembourg in 1989 and won the Prize of the audience. It has won many and various awards and prizes.
Polyrhythmia has recorded LPs, CDs and appeared in more than 40 TV shows.

Prof. Dr. Dobri Paliev plays, com¬poses and teaches percussion instruments in a musical style valuable for the whole of Europe. He develops such human qualities which are the most important thing for the art of music.

Prof. Dr. Dobri Paliev (1928-1997) was born in Pernik, Bulgaria. As a performer he built up a new image for the capacity of the per¬cussion instruments.
As a pedagogue he created the Bulgarian percussion school with its specific style and contributed to its high international reputation. As a guest lecturer he taught at Musical Academies and Conservatories in Strasbourg and Saint Sauve, France; in Luxembourg; Hambourg, Wurtzburg - Germany; Thessaloniki, - Greece; in Russia, Poland and other countries.
His work as a composer is enormous. He wrote pieces for individual percussion instruments; chamber music; film and theatrical music. He is the author of a huge amount of instructive literature for percussion instruments.
